The Test Of Ability To Instruct - Part Three

The final part is also a 60 minute test which is split into 2 role phases.  The supervising examiner will be role playing as a complete beginner or a learner driver with limited driving knowledge or even a trained driver who requires remedial tuition (Please note, The supervising examiner will play two of the roles mentioned above on the Part Three test).  The object of the test is to assess the quality of the potential driving instructor’s ability to give instructions and their ability to pass on knowledge to the pupils.

During the Part 3 test the supervising examiner will select one topic from each of the following subjects to correspond with the role they will play

PHASE 1 Subjects
  • Safety precautions on entering the car and explanation of the controls.
  • Moving and stopping.
  • Turn-in-the-road exercise.
  • Reversing (to the right or left).
  • Emergency stop and the use of mirrors.
  • Dealing with pedestrian crossing and giving signals by indicators/arms.
  • Approaching junctions to turn either right or left.
  • Dealing with emerging at road junctions.
  • Dealing with crossroads.
  • Meeting, overtaking and crossing other traffic, allowing adequate clearance for other road users and anticipation.
PHASE 2 Subjects
  • Dealing with crossroads.
  • Meeting, overtaking and crossing other traffic, allowing adequate clearance for other road users and anticipation.
  • Approaching junctions to turn either right or left.
  • Dealing with emerging at road junctions.
  • Dealing with pedestrian crossing and giving signals by indicators/arms.
  • Making progress and general road positioning
  • Reverse parking.

Each subject test will last approx 30 minutes, after phase 1 is completed the potential driving instructor will move on to the phase 2 subject which should also last approx 30 minutes.

During the Part 3 test candidiates will be assessed on each of the following :
